Pasolini adapted a work by the Marquis de Sade, transplanting the setting to Salo, Mussolini's Facist holdout set up in northern Italy after he was freed by SS commandos. In a vast mansion, a party of Facists have rounded up a group of attractive young people to satisfy their depraved desires. As in earlier works, Pasolini updates a traditional myth to modern times; here, he takes the early Christian notion of the "world upside down," and gives it a material, horrifying reality.
