- 4 little girls 1998
- The Birmingham Campaign was launched in 1963. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists were soon jailed...but it was the participation of the children that advanced the momentum of the Birmingham movement. They marched alongside the adults and were taken to jail with them as well. The 16th St. Baptist Church was close to the downtown area, it was an ideal location to hold rallies and meetings. On Sunday morning, Sept. 15, 1963, dynamite planted by the Ku Klux Klan, exploded in the building...under the fallen debris the bodies of [four] girls were found--Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley died because of the color of their skin.

- Ballot measure 9 1995
- In 1992, Oregon and Colorado became testing grounds for ballot initiatives to amend the states' constitutions. Colorado's Amendment 2 and Oregon's Measure 9 would prohibit and revoke laws which protect homosexuals from discrimination. The Oregon referendum, sponsored by the Oregon Citizens' Alliance, further mandated that all government agencies and schools recognize homosexuality as "abnormal, wrong, unnatural and perverse," and that no government property or monies could be used to "facilitate" homosexuality. This is the story of what happened in Oregon, with a focus on the grass-roots campaign to kill the measure.

- Evening the odds is title IX working? 1999
- In 1972, Title IX was established, a civil rights act that prohibits gender discrimination at any school that receives federal funds. In this program, Elisabeth Brackett, of WTTW in Chicago, goes to Indiana University -- alma mater of Olympic diving medalists Lesley Bush and Cynthia Potter - to investigate higher education's Title IX track record in the area of sports. The IU administration is working diligently to meet Title IX conditions by creating new athletics programs and spreading out scholarship dollars more evenly between male and female athletes. But a USA Today survey found that only seven Division 1 schools have met the Title IX standards for gender equity. IU does not expect to be in compliance until 2004, and the National Women's Law Center, which has filed complaints against a number of other schools for discriminating against female athletes in scholarship funding, is doing its best to speed up the process.

- In this program, NewsHour correspondent Elizabeth Bracket reports on a Chicago resolution in support of reparations to descendants of African American slaves. The segment includes interviews with proponents, Dorothy Tillman, a Chicago Alderman who sponsored the resolution and Rep. John Conyers who has sponsored a congressional bill to form a presidential commission to study the concept. Also interviewed are economist Walter Williams who opposes the resolution, as well as Alderman Brian Doherty, the only board member to dissent.

- A documentary film exploring the history of ownership of farm lands by African Americans from Reconstruction to the present day. Their struggle for land of their own pitted them against both the Southern white power structure and the federal agencies responsible for helping them. As part of Reconstruction, Congress alloted 45 million acres of land to former slaves but little land was ever actually distributed. Despite formidable obstacles one million African Americans, mostly former sharecroppers, managed to purchase over 15 million acres of land by 1910.

FIDA lawyers attempt to reconcile the women and their men in face to face meetings, even if it means traveling to isolated villages. The attitudes of both men and women are beginning to change, but this slow process sometimes leads to conflicts between offical and traditional law.
