New! Medieval studies online subject research guide

Faculty and students researching topics in the Middle Ages might feel like they have their own knight in shining armor, in the form of a new Libraries online subject research guide.

The Medieval Studies online subject research guide, created by World History Librarian Jim Niessen, provides lists and references to materials in the Rutgers University Libraries and links to online resources for the study of European culture and society during the millennium between the Fall of the Roman Empire and the Reformation. A section on indexes highlights print and online tools for the identification of articles in periodicals. A broad listing of reference books includes dozens of bibliographies, encyclopedias, and handbooks organized by language, region, and type of reference publication. A section on manuscripts will be of greatest interest to literary scholars, including listings of manuscript catalogs, electronic manuscript catalogs, and pointers to manuscript collections or facsimiles at or near Rutgers, while another on primary sources is designed for historians, identifying the most important collections in print and microform as well as online.

This guide also features a description of the incunabula and festival books held by Libraries' Special Collections and University Archives, which were graciously donated by Rutgers History Professor Karl Morrison and exhibited in the Alexander Library in 2004. The guide also includes a list of the six most prominent medieval studies Internet portals, a suggestion form for new materials to be acquired by the Libraries, and links to related research guides in 14 other fields.
